Culturally Responsive Language Classroom
From the fifth webinar in American English Live: Teacher Development Series 17! Date: 12July2023
#AmericanEnglishforEducators
During this webinar, “Starting the Year as a Culturally Responsive Language Classroom,” Lauren Anderson will share practical strategies and activities that teachers can use to enhance language learning in a culturally and linguistically responsive way from the first day of class.
From there, I get this idea π‘… If I were to plan for my teaching, on the first day of my class, I would use birthday celebration as the topic.
1. When is their birthday? Age: the best thing about being my age is I have celebrated (how many times) of birthday π…
2. What is the classroom situation? It’s made up of what community? National: if you visit my country, you would find that it’s …ππ«π§βπ€βπ§π¨βππ¨βπ©βπ§βπ§ππ§π§ββοΈπ§ββοΈπ§ββοΈπ©βπΌπ§
3. How people celebrate birthday?
4. The students discuss and present… The students as co-creator of knowledge, they share their experience on how they celebrate their birthdays, the community norms.. students’ cultural background brings to the classroom.
5. Types of birthday, from baby one month (full moon) to old age … The culture of different races ..
Reference: example… Chinese culture . https://www.wishful.my/blogs/news/baby-full-moon-celebration
Another reference, example: https://wp.me/p2qwlw-3J
Language functions and form … Activities: example, making birthday cards / gifts (art) , writing story book…
Based on the level and age of the learners, and also the curriculum (syllabus). The language skills that I want to teach. I would adapt the idea according to my needs.
Example 1: teaching speaking .. The students can describe their experiences during birthday celebration, show the photos they have, since they were babies to the current age…. For those who never have their birthday celebrated, they can also say or share why they didn’t… But what they eat at π … etc…. They can also create a story π…. These activities might help to address learning issues such as students not paying attention, not interested in learning English etc.. Reference: A case study (my mini project on Issues in Teacher Education for TESOL, 8July2023@USM)
Example 2: teaching writing.. As Teacher Lauren gave that day as prompt.. I could use that.. The best thing about being my age is I have encountered (?times) of birthdays. Birthday to me is a date to remind me the day I arrived in this world…. I appreciate each and everyday although not everyday I have is…….
Student learning outcome (SLO). How to write the SLO… https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid07h6jEz2UUJj4J9DRBUXzNNhW5RkDvmTDEWCddAdm2wjbaGAVdYjQugNm5tHquGREl&id=100064783775888
In relation to this, the next topic: Responsible decision making in the classroom.. with SEL framework. Teachers’ decision making in the classroom. Teaching is a series of decision making…. Teachers make decisions:
Curriculum – plan the lessons from the syllabus, lesson content, what to teach,
Instruction – teaching approaches to use… How to teach, materials or teaching resources to be used…
Assessment – form judgement about the quality of students work or performance from available information βΉοΈ, relate these to a rubric, criteria, scale, standard….
Classroom climate – to create a well-rounded happy and productive classroom environment with SEL competencies – self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills… Classroom management, behaviour management (how to address unwanted behaviour and to reinforce the positive behaviour). Self-management (teacher behaviour) – how the teachers present themselves, voice projection, ….giving instrument..
The 5Cs of language learning: communication and cultures, communities and comparison, connection.
My reflection: Teacher as decision maker. In order to have a cultural responsive language classroom, teacher needs to decide on a topic for lesson planning. In this example, I use birthday celebration. The next topic can be new year celebration, festive foods, marriage ceremony, traditional clothes, traditional music, traditional games, etc… Prepared by: Adeline G Khaw
